How to Motivate Others
Human beings are incredibly complex. Our genetics, upbringing, and life experiences combine to make each of us completely unique. That is what makes life interesting, and it is also what makes motivating others so hard.
We all have different personalities, desires, and needs, which means we are driven by different things.
If you are wondering how to motivate others, you are aware of the challenges and you need solutions. The good news is that great leaders are made, not born. You can learn to develop the skills that let you inspire people and help them achieve more than they ever dreamed.

1- LIVE BY YOUR VALUES
If you want to know how to motivate others, look no further than your own example. Great leaders take seriously the idea: “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Jeff Bezos’s bold, visionary ideas are legendary. Bill Gates is known as one of the hardest workers in tech. Elon Musk has literally worked himself to the point of collapse.
All of these leaders were fueled by unshakable belief in themselves. They knew what they wanted and did whatever it took to get there. People are drawn to certainty. When you discover your passion in life and let it feed your inner fire, motivating others becomes more natural because they are drawn to that passion.
2- LISTEN TO OTHERS
It is impossible to motivate others without listening to them. The truth is you will never inspire people to act if you are the one doing all the talking. Listening is essential. It shows you are genuinely interested in what they have to say and that you truly care about their lives.
“Listening” is more than simply “hearing” someone. It is an active state that takes focus and effort. Put your phone away and step back from your computer so you can give the person your full attention. Maintain good eye contact and practice mirroring: subtly matching some of the movements and posture of the person you are speaking with. That helps them feel safe and understood. Also give both verbal and nonverbal feedback. Remember, you cannot learn how to motivate others until you learn to be a good listener.
3- ASK QUESTIONS
As I have said several times in my new video series, successful people ask better questions and, as a result, get better answers. Giving the right feedback is just as important as listening genuinely. When you ask the right questions, you can build a real connection, uncover someone’s deepest dreams and desires, and in turn discover how to motivate them.
4- ADAPT YOUR STYLE
People respond differently to different motivators. They also have different communication styles, such as internal and external frames of reference and a tendency to look for similarities or differences. Motivating others means adapting your leadership style to fit different personalities and ways of communicating.
Start by identifying your natural leadership style. Work on strengthening your weaker areas, such as coaching skills or how you use praise and encouragement. When you can shift your leadership style at will, you will discover how to motivate others no matter who they are.
5- SHOW THEM YOU TRUST THEM
Delegating responsibility is key to motivating others. Show that you trust them and believe they have the skills to do the job. That makes them want to live up to your expectations. As with anything involving leadership, effective communication is essential if you want the outcome you are aiming for.
Set clear goals that stretch them a little but remain achievable given their skills and experience. Goals that are too easy will not push them to improve, while goals that are too hard can frustrate them and kill motivation. The right goals give them the drive they need to become their best selves.
6- BE A SOURCE OF SUPPORT
Motivating others is not only about delivering inspiring speeches. It is about following up and giving people the support they need to reach their goals. That means providing the physical tools and programs they need to succeed, and also offering emotional support.
Ask how you can help, let them know you are there for them, always follow up, and keep them on track toward success. When people hit their goals, they gain confidence. When they gain confidence, they start to believe in themselves and feel inspired to achieve even more. Great leaders are the catalyst that lights the inner passion, then use that flame to light the right path.
