Is Your Partner an Asset or a Liability?

Assets Vs Liability

In English finance and business, two terms define what helps you make money and what drains it. An asset is the positive side. It can be a property, an investment, or a person. It helps you grow, improve, expand your projects, and more. A liability is like a liability on a balance sheet. It costs you, slows you down, and keeps you from advancing the way you want.

As I shared in one of my earliest articles some time ago, your partner is a determining factor in your success.

So the real question is: how do you know whether your partner is an asset or a risk? There are several ways to measure it. Some may look surface-level, but as with every topic that involves taste or opinion, what matters is what is underneath.

Here is a list of common problems I have seen in the relationships of many clients over the years.

1- You dread taking your partner to a professional event

Your partner is an extension of you and part of your image. “Tell me who you associate with and I will tell you who you are.” Every entrepreneur uses that fact when forming an opinion about a potential partner, a supplier, or anyone they might do business with.

If you fear your partner’s carelessness or lack of discretion, you need to find a way to make that clear and to coach them so they show up with the diplomacy and professionalism those situations demand.

2- You cannot have real conversations

As an entrepreneur who is truly committed to your project and your growth, you never stopped reading, learning, and exchanging ideas with people who think differently. You are someone who always wants to learn, whether from a book or a conversation.

Unfortunately, many entrepreneurs are with a partner who does not share the same vision or ambitions. That hurts the quality of communication in the relationship. When you try to have a conversation that requires a certain level of knowledge, the other person often has no interest in staying with the topic.

If the lack of communication with your partner is hurting your growth, your happiness, your stability, or any other area that can damage your health or your business, address it before it becomes a much larger problem.

3- Your partner leaves you more work than support

I have seen this in my own family. I had a sister who worked from early morning until late at night. She was launching her practice and had no time to help at home during the week. Her partner had a regular 9-to-5 job, yet he did not cook, did not clean, and waited for her to arrive at 10 p.m. to do everything, complaining that he was hungry and had been waiting since 7 p.m.

It went on for years until she had enough after several attempts to talk and ask him to contribute. She left, and her happiness shot up like a rocket, and so did her business. It turned out that the problems at home had been hurting her business, and everything changed once she started living on her own.

4- Your partner does not present a good image

It is common for some powerful men and women to feel they need a “pretty face” beside them. I had a client like that last year, and it was hurting both his professional and personal life. Why? A trophy partner is not for everyone.

In his case, he had deep self-esteem and confidence issues and started stressing day and night whenever he was not with her. Another problem was that she had a very provocative style. Her presence online and at public events did not match the person he was married to.

Remember: your partner should not create image worries or problems for you. If that is happening, a clear conversation can often fix it. In extreme cases, a professional can help as well.

5- Your partner does not support you

Living as a couple is like being partners in a company. Each person has a role, responsibilities, and obligations. That does not apply only to household tasks. If they do not support you emotionally and cannot lift you when you are down, there may be a deeper problem, and your partner may be a liability.

6- Your partner creates financial stress

Usually this problem comes from a lack of communication and understanding between you and your partner. If you are the only one supporting the household, you must be transparent about the financial health of your home. In many cases I found clients whose spouses spent large amounts every day without knowing the husband had debt or other money problems. In that situation the problem is you. But if your partner complains and ignores you when you explain and set limits, the problem may be on their side.

It is important to grasp the subtlety in every point above. Problems are never purely black or white. If your partner behaves in a way that hurts you, you also carry part of the responsibility. Do not think that by listing these points I am saying the other person is more at fault than you. I am simply presenting real situations that have come up repeatedly with clients from different countries and different socioeconomic levels. This is a summary of problems with comments I hope can help other people.
