How to Find Your Purpose in Life

It took me more than 20 years to find my life purpose. I diversified my attempts, mistakes, highs and lows across every area of my life searching for what would truly complete me and make me happy. Finding your purpose is a journey without a map. It is very hard to achieve, and the reason most people feel “stuck” is that they have not found what is meant for them, or they have not asked themselves the right questions yet.

How to Find My Purpose

To find it, you will need to take several steps. The first is to change the mindset of looking in only one place and giving up too soon. A person living a life with purpose does not quit. Ever.

1- Ask Yourself a Series of Questions

  1. When have I felt the happiest in my life so far?
  2. What are the moments when I have felt most proud of myself?
  3. Which qualities do I admire most in people?
  4. What makes me feel full of energy and motivation?
  5. How do I feel day to day in my current life?
  6. What would be the #1 change I could make today to feel happier?
  7. Which “shoulds” are taking the place of my “musts”? Read this article
  8. If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?
  9. If you had only one more week on this earth, how would you want to live it?

2- Write a List of Your Interests and Passions

Write down the things you enjoy spending time on. These can relate to your work, your personal life, or home life. They should be things that make you happy, that you truly enjoy doing. These are activities you enjoy even without getting paid for them, and they will likely make you lose track of time while you do them.

3- Read

Start reading about personalities you admire, businesses, or stories that interest you. It helps awaken a feeling of “I want to do that too,” and when you hit the right subject, it will begin to shape every decision you make in your life. The problem with searching for a purpose is that many people get lost in the romance of the idea without any real knowledge of what it involves. Informing yourself about what it takes to live a life in that direction will help you make the necessary adjustments so you can pursue it.

4- Listen to What Other People Appreciate About You

If you are real with yourself, you will be real with others; and by being a genuine, authentic, sincere person, you will realize that the purpose you are discovering often shows up in what others appreciate about you. So it is important to listen to feedback from your friends, family, and colleagues. It will help you see whether you are on the right path.

5- Do Not Listen to Society’s “Rules”

If there is one thing I detest in life, it is people placing a ceiling on someone’s potential. Norms are not there to help people, so it is essential that you ignore the criticism. If I had listened to my family’s criticism when I decided to travel and live in other countries without money, I would never have had the path I have had, and I would never have achieved the success I have today. If you want to live a life of purpose, you must turn off the noise.

6- Align Your Goals with Your Life Purpose and Passions

Having a purpose is one part of the path, but having goals is another. It is important that you can align both elements in your life plan. We do not live on love and fresh water alone in this world. You need to find a way to live on the path that calls to you. In my case, I had always been drawn to working in sports, but it did not align with my need to live free: financial freedom, time freedom, freedom from authority. So I decided to keep searching for another purpose, and little by little life led me toward entrepreneurship and business and life consulting.

7- Commit to Your True Life Purpose

Once you have gained more clarity about your purpose, you do not need to overhaul your entire life all at once. Instead, simply lean toward it, little by little.

Start fulfilling your purpose a little more each day, and pay attention to the feedback you receive from others, to the results you are producing, and also to how you feel.
