Going on a diet or taking better care of how you eat does not mean you have to set every sweet craving aside. On the contrary, dieting does not necessarily mean eating less. It means reassessing the amounts and the times of day when you enjoy certain foods. A nutritionist friend of mine spent four hours explaining to me a couple of weeks ago how important it is not to suffer while you are on a diet.

So I decided to share a few healthy snack ideas that let you enjoy the journey toward a healthier body. Remember: Healthy Body, Healthy Mind.

1- Mixed nuts

They are not my personal favorite, but I know plenty of people who dropped nuts the moment they started dieting. Nuts are an ideal nutritious snack. They have been linked to a lower risk of heart disease and may help protect against certain cancers, depression, and other conditions.

Nuts deliver the perfect balance of healthy fats, protein, and fiber. A 28-gram serving contains roughly 180 calories.

Even though they are relatively high in fat, they are very filling. Several studies suggest that eating nuts in moderation can actually support weight loss.

2- Apple slices with peanut butter

Peanut butter may offer extra heart-health benefits. Research shows it can raise HDL cholesterol while lowering LDL cholesterol and triglycerides.

Apples are rich in fiber and polyphenol antioxidants that support gut health and reduce the risk of heart disease. Put the two together and they taste incredible.

That said, peanut butter is fairly calorie-dense. While it has not generally been linked to weight gain, it is still best enjoyed in moderation.

3- Celery sticks with cream cheese

Celery sticks with cream cheese are a classic low-carb snack.

Celery contains luteolin, an antioxidant that reduces inflammation and may also help prevent cancer.

Adding cream cheese turns plain celery sticks into a delicious, satisfying bite.

Five small celery sticks with 60 grams of cream cheese come in at under 200 calories.

4- Dark chocolate and almonds

If you love chocolate the way I do, this one is for you. Dark chocolate is packed with flavanols that can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart disease, provided the bar contains at least 70% cocoa solids.

Almonds are high in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and have beneficial effects on blood-sugar control. Studies also show they can curb appetite and support weight loss.

Both dark chocolate and almonds are rich in magnesium. About 28 grams of each delivers roughly 300 calories in total, depending on the cocoa content.

5- A piece of fruit

Healthy snacks do not need to be complicated. A single piece of fruit can be incredibly satisfying.

Portable options that require almost no prep include bananas, apples, pears, grapes, grapefruit, and oranges.

6- Baby carrots with blue cheese dressing

I am French, so of course I had to include a cheese option. Carrots rank among the best sources of carotenoids, including beta-carotene, which your body can convert into vitamin A. The carotenoids in carrots may lower your risk of cancer, heart disease, and cataracts.

7- Spicy avocado

Avocados are among the most nutritious and satisfying foods on the planet.

Studies show they can help lower LDL cholesterol, ease arthritis symptoms, and protect skin from sun damage, among other benefits. They are also rich in fiber, potassium, magnesium, and monounsaturated fats.

Take half a medium avocado, add a pinch of salt and a dash of cayenne pepper, and you have a flavorful, filling snack with around 130 calories.
