What a public page will never show you is the private account. Read the statement, the posted rate, and the insurance rule.
The public page is on the screen. The account that belongs to you is the statement, not the headline beside it.
A public page about money can teach you a rule, a definition, or the existence of a product. It can show you a rate the institution is willing to print. It can show you a biography, a book, or a regulator's explanation of risk. What a public page will never show you is the inside of your account. Your balance, your fees, the dates money actually moved, and the result of a choice you made last quarter live on a statement and in the agreement you signed.
I keep that distinction sharp because readers arrive with a reasonable hope. They have seen a number on a screen, and they want the number to be about them. Sometimes the screen is a bank. Sometimes it is a newspaper. Sometimes it is a page of mine. The hope feels the same, and the objects are different. A product page is a shelf. A profile is a profile. An account is a record of what happened to a particular sum of money under a particular contract. Count the books that exist, then stop is the same habit applied to objects you can hold. You count the thing in front of you. You do not promote a sentence on a public page into a balance.
Price a life change before you invent the budget is where I start with anyone who is about to treat a public number as a plan. A life change has a cost you can write down from your own bills. The budget is that cost, set next to the money that actually arrives. What a higher price of money changes is the neighbouring fact: when the price of borrowing rises, the same life costs more to finance, and the same savings may pay a different reward. Neither fact appears automatically on a homepage. You still have to read the account you have.
Start with the statement, because it is the page that is yours. In the United States, the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency keeps a public help desk for bank customers called HelpWithMyBank. The bank-accounts index collects the questions a depositor can actually ask: statements and records, fees and terms, funds availability, deposit insurance, interest on savings, errors, and overdrafts. The index is here: Bank accounts. It will not log into your bank. It will tell you which questions have a rule behind them.
The statements section is more specific. If electronic transfers can move into or out of the account, the bank must, in many cases, send a statement at least monthly that summarises those transfers. The bank can generally change the cycle date, and the place you check that is your own agreement. The bank is not required by law to return canceled checks. If it does not return them, it generally has to keep the checks, or a copy, for five years. For any deposit over one hundred dollars, the bank must keep records for at least five years. Those answers sit here: Statements and records. I give you the desk, not a substitute for the envelope.
Read the statement in order. Opening balance. Money in, with dates. Money out, with dates and descriptions. Fees, named as fees. Interest, if any, named as interest. Closing balance. Then compare the closing balance with the number in the app tonight, and with the number you remember. Differences have ordinary causes: a payment that has not cleared, a fee you forgot, a transfer you made on the other side of the cycle date. The statement is how you stop guessing which cause it was. Manage a monthly budget is the practice of laying that statement next to the month you meant to live. The budget without the statement is a wish. The statement without the budget is a history. You want both.
Institutions print rates because a rate is a price they can show to everyone at once. The Bank of England's explainer says what the word means, and the definition is stable even when the Bank's own rate moves. If you are borrowing, the interest rate is the amount you are charged, shown as a percentage of the loan. A higher percentage means you pay back more. If you are saving, the rate tells you how much will be paid into the account, as a percentage of the savings. Bank Rate is the core rate the Bank sets. It is what the Bank pays institutions that hold money with it, and what it charges on loans to them, and it influences the rates those institutions then offer their own customers. High-street rates also depend on other things, including how likely the lender thinks a loan is to be repaid, and how long the money is committed. The explainer is here: What are interest rates?.
That is a public lesson about a public price. Your result is a different object. A savings account that advertises a rate may pay that rate only above a balance, only for an introductory period, or only if you leave the money untouched. The amount that arrives is on the statement, after the conditions you actually met. A loan's posted rate becomes a monthly payment only once you include the term, the fees, and whether the rate can change. What a higher price of money changes is visible once you rerun your own payment. A headline about a central bank is the weather. The statement is the street you live on.
A deposit and an investment are different contracts, even when one company sells both. A specified savings rate is a price printed in advance, subject to the conditions in the agreement. An investment's result moves, and it can be smaller than the money you put in. The public explanation of that difference belongs on a regulator's page. The figure that happened to you belongs on the statement from the firm that holds the account. Read the explanation so you know which contract you signed. Read the statement so you know what the contract did this month.
Deposit insurance is another public page that people promote into a personal promise. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation states the rule in plain language. It provides deposit insurance so that money at an insured bank is protected if that bank fails. Deposits are automatically insured to at least 250,000 dollars at each FDIC-insured bank. The products named on the page as covered, when they are deposits at an insured bank, include checking accounts, savings accounts, money market deposit accounts, and certificates of deposit. The page also lists products that are not deposits and are not insured: mutual funds, annuities, life insurance policies, stocks and bonds. Coverage is automatic when you open a covered account at an insured bank. The page is here: Deposit insurance.
Read that as a map of categories. It tells you the kind of account the insurance was built for, and the kind of product that sits outside it even when a bank sells both at the same counter. It does not tell you your balance. It does not tell you whether your particular bank is insured until you check, and the FDIC tells you to check. It does not turn an uninsured product into an insured one because the logo was nearby. If you hold both a savings account and a fund at institutions that share a brand, the statement for each one tells you which is which. The public page tells you why the distinction matters.
Fees live in the same gap. A public page may say that an account has “no monthly fee” under conditions printed in a footnote. The statement shows whether the fee arrived. Funds availability, overdrafts, and the order in which payments are taken are in the agreement and then in the lines of the month. HelpWithMyBank can point you at the topic. The lines themselves are on your paper or in your secure mailbox. I would rather you spend the evening on those lines than on a second article about money in the abstract.
How Much Money Is There in the World? is a public question about a public stock of money. It can be fascinating. It will not tell you whether you can pay the rent in March. How to Profit From a Recession and Make Money is a public question about a downturn. A downturn changes prices, including the price of money, and it still does not print your result. Have Fun Without Spending Money is the household version of the same honesty: a good week can be designed from the cash you already have, which you know because you looked. Manage a monthly budget is the page on this site that walks the private side. Use it with the statement open.
A life-change budget, the one I mean in Price a life change before you invent the budget, is a list of dated costs. Housing, food, transport, tax, debt payments, and a reserve. You can build that list from statements and from bills. A rate on a homepage is an offer. A story about someone else's year is a story. When the price of money changes, you edit the debt lines and the savings lines and you look again. The edit is the work. The public page gave you the vocabulary for the edit.
A reader who wants a number, and the sentence I still will not write stays with this same split: the figure on your statement, the figure an institution posts as an offer, and the figure a regulator uses to describe a category. In the middle of February the practical version is the one you can finish tonight. If the number is yours, it is on an account you can open. If the number is an institution's offer, it is a posted rate with conditions. If the number is a rule about insurance or about statements, it describes a category of account. Keep the three in separate columns.
Tonight, open one account. Download or unfold the latest statement. Check that the opening balance matches the previous closing balance. Read every fee. Read any interest line next to the rate the bank is currently posting, and note the conditions you did or did not meet. If the account is a deposit at a U.S. bank, use the FDIC's categories to say whether you are looking at an insured deposit or at something else the bank also sells. If you are looking at an investment, treat the posted hope and the statement as two different documents, and let the statement tell you what has happened so far.
Then write the month in your own budget, on paper or in the tool you already trust. How Much Money Is There in the World?, How to Profit From a Recession and Make Money, and Have Fun Without Spending Money can stay on the shelf as public questions. They are good questions. They are not your statement. What a public page will never show you is the line with your name on it. That line is already being kept. Go and read it.
