They lose assets and cash. Other people profit from a recession and make money. As I always say: that money has to go somewhere. You do not simply lose it and watch it vanish into thin air. The real question is: where does that money go?<\/p>\n<p>The answer is simple and logical. The money you lose in a recession ends up in the bank accounts of people who prepared.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">How do I prepare for a recession?<\/h2>\n<h3>1- Analyze the economic environment<\/h3>\n<p>Before anything else, study the economic situation you are living in. There are several levels to review:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Local economy<\/li>\n<li>National<\/li>\n<li>International<\/li>\n<li>Your industry<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each layer matters because it helps you anticipate downturns or slowdown phases in the market, and which segments will start losing money or at least margin as consumer spending drops or business demand for a product or service weakens.<\/p>\n<h3>2- Get your finances ready<\/h3>\n<p>Start conserving cash. If you planned to buy a new car or a house, wait. If your analysis is right, you will need that saved capital to put into the opportunities that open up. Do not spend it on products or services you do not absolutely need.<\/p>\n<p>To profit from a recession, you need cash on hand so you can invest when prices fall and banks cut interest rates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Sponsored*<\/em><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\">Where should you invest once the recession has started?<\/h2>\n<p>Investing depends on several factors: which industries you know, how much capital you have, your time horizon (short, medium, or long term), and how much risk you are willing to take.<\/p>\n<h3>1- Real estate<\/h3>\n<p>When a recession hits, many people can no longer cover mortgages or rent and have to exit quickly. That works in your favor. If someone is in a hurry to sell a home, the price will drop versus pre-recession market levels. You can take advantage of low-interest loans, wait for the crisis to pass, and resell for a gain of 20% or more with relative ease.<\/p>\n<h3>2- Stocks<\/h3>\n<p>Buying stocks can look foolish to many people. While share prices of many companies fall fast in an economic crisis, you can use the recession to buy high-quality stocks at cents on the dollar. In plain terms, if the company is large enough, has solid cash flow, and a strong structure you believe can survive the crisis, the odds are high that its stock will recover past pre-recession levels once markets stabilize again.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if you skipped shares of Company X at $130 each and they drop to $83 during the recession, buying with a medium- or long-term horizon (3 to 10 years) can deliver a large gain when the price returns to $130 or climbs higher.<\/p>\n<p>In some well-established companies you can also collect dividends on the shares you buy. It depends on the business, but you can research before you invest and receive income during the recession without waiting for the stock price to rise.<\/p>\n<h3>3- Shorting<\/h3>\n<p>Another angle for your stock strategy is to identify companies that will not survive or will be hit hard by the crisis. Instead of buying shares to sell later at a higher price, you can short them. In simple terms, you bet against the stock: the lower it falls, the more you make.<\/p>\n<h3>4- Invest in essential goods<\/h3>\n<p>In a recession you can also profit from demand for essentials: everything people keep buying whether there is a crisis or not. Water, food, medicine, and similar items. People still have to live, and certain products remain non-negotiable even in hard times. If you see a recession forming in the coming months, or one that is already starting (as here in Mexico at the time of writing), look for investment opportunities in essential goods.<\/p>\n<h3>5- Think 3D: deaths, divorces, defaults<\/h3>\n<p>It is well documented that in a recession the numbers for deaths, divorces, and defaults rise. That creates a group of people who need to unload assets fast (real estate, luxury items, fixed assets, and more) because someone in the family died, because they must split property in a divorce and need cash to rebuild and pay lawyers, or because they can no longer service debt and want to shed property before they dig deeper into the hole.<\/p>\n<p>If you are opportunistic, this approach can be highly profitable in the short term. A recession or crisis lasts about 1.5 years on average, which gives you time to build a cheap portfolio you can sell at a much higher price when the economy normalizes.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are many ways to come through a recession and profit from it. An economic winter does not have to be winter for you.
