Giving your kids a solid foundation and teaching them about money is essential to their personal development. Showing them the basics (how to budget, spend, and save) will establish good money habits for life.

Invisible money

In an age of credit cards, online banking, and e-commerce, kids rarely see people pay for things with physical cash, bills, and coins.

When they never watch cash change hands, it becomes harder for them to grasp that things actually cost money. They may start treating this “invisible money” as an abstract, unlimited resource instead of real money that flows in and out of the family bank accounts.

Sponsored*

When and how to talk about money with your kids

Teaching younger children the value of money through real-life situations and examples helps them understand where money comes from and how it is earned. Here are a few practical ways to approach it.

At the ATM

Explain that the ATM holds money you earned through hard work and saving. It is not a magic hole in the wall that spits out cash. When you withdraw money, you are taking it from your bank account, which means you will have less left to spend later.

At the supermarket

At the grocery store, show your kids how prices are set and that the same product often comes in cheaper or more expensive versions. Use it as a chance to talk about comparing prices to get the best deal.

Have them compare prices for you and pick the lowest one. If they insist on a particular brand, calmly explain the price difference.

Paying bills

At my oldest daughter’s school, parents were asked to teach kids how bills are paid and how much we spend on electricity, water, internet, and similar expenses. What I do is explain that covering a $3,500 electricity bill took me a certain number of hours at work to earn. This creates a clear link between time spent working and money, and it shows that electricity and internet actually cost the family real money. It also makes them think twice before leaving lights and appliances on.

Give them money to manage

Giving your children money on a regular basis helps them understand its value from an early age. You do not need to hand over large amounts; the sum should fit your family’s budget.

Money is not free

You can use allowance to encourage a strong work ethic. Set clear tasks for your kids. If those tasks are not completed, you can choose not to pay them or to pay them less. This reinforces the idea that you only get paid in full when the work is done properly.

Piggy banks versus bank accounts

Piggy banks are a fun way for kids to start learning about money and building the habit of saving. They work especially well for younger children as a first step and feel more tangible than depositing money into a bank account. A bank account for your child can introduce the ideas of saving and interest early on, and it lets them learn about different compound interest topics, for example.

How often to give them money to manage

To strengthen your child’s sense of responsibility with money, do not give them cash every day. Start with once a week for ages 3 to 6 so they learn that if they spend it all at once, nothing is left until the following week. As they get older, move to every two weeks. That helps them practice saving and managing expenses, and it works well from about ages 7 to 10 or 11. Once they reach the age when they go out with friends to the mall, movies, and similar activities, switch to a monthly payment. A major driver of poverty in society is people who are paid weekly or biweekly and never learn to manage longer cycles. If you do not give your children solid financial education, they will struggle to manage money well enough to build wealth as adults.

Remember: successful entrepreneurs, especially those who invest in projects, real estate, and similar ventures, do not necessarily receive money every week or every two weeks. They may go months without seeing a single cent. Without financial education, you go broke before you ever earn a return.

[3971,3973

post-14057","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance","category-personal-growth

Teach Kids the Value of Money | Financial Education for Children

<meta name="description" content="When kids build strong money skills early, they are ready for adult financial challenges.
