In an unstable economy, business owners face more than a drop in customers. They face a rise in people willing to do whatever it takes to make money. That is where the saboteur comes in: someone ready to scam, steal, or sue at the expense of your business.<\/p>\n

There are several types of business saboteurs, from the most obvious to the ones you would never expect. No company is fully free of this risk. Your job as a leader is to spot and prevent these behaviors.<\/p>\n

1- Starting with yourself<\/h2>\n

The first saboteur in a business is often the owner or the partners. Over the years I have seen a clear pattern of behaviors among clients that explain many company problems. Identify where your weaknesses sit and fix them. They can be as simple as poor sleep habits or procrastinating when it is time to work<\/a>. They do not always come from a negative mindset. Sometimes a personality trait that looks positive is exactly what creates the trouble.<\/p>\n

1.1 The perfectionist<\/h3>\n

Perfectionism is one of the most common. When you start a business you hold very precise ideas about what you want to achieve and how to get there. The problem appears when things do not unfold exactly as planned and you cannot move forward. Perfectionism hurts for several reasons: it costs time, and time is money. It also costs your health. Stress keeps you from resting, and without rest you cannot work with a clear head at full capacity.<\/p>\n

1.2 Giving too much<\/h3>\n

Some entrepreneurs, myself included, carry a mission that goes beyond the business itself. They want to help others. No matter which cause you support, you must measure what you pour into it. I have worked with clients who donated so many resources and so much money to foundations that by year-end the company had nothing left to grow. Giving matters, yet you also have to know how to keep enough.<\/p>\n

1.3 Over-pleasing<\/h3>\n

I have seen this problem in several clients, and its exact opposite as well. These are owners who want to please their employees. That is a good impulse, especially today. Reducing turnover and making sure people feel comfortable and can work under proper conditions is important. Still, do it with clear limits. Some entrepreneurs let employees take the boss\u2019s seat. The owners stop being real owners and become victims of their team\u2019s vanity and greed. They end up hostages of their own workforce.<\/p>\n

2- Accountants<\/h2>\n

Warning<\/span>: I am not saying every accountant is a problem. I am saying this is a sensitive part of the business that demands real care.<\/p>\n

You need systems that let you track movements, decisions, actions, and everything related to the flow of money through your accounts. I have seen multiple cases where accountants, not always direct employees, found ways to pull money from my clients\u2019 accounts simply because the owners trusted them too much and let themselves be deceived.<\/p>\n

3- Executives<\/h2>\n

Executives inside a company often hold confidential information, the kind of vital data your competition would love to buy. You need a rigorous hiring process to make sure the people on your team will not develop that kind of need or thinking once they work with you and gain access to the heart of the company. Digital systems matter a great deal for preventing these problems. While I have not seen many cases of this happening, I have seen plenty of companies try to buy information from their competitors (usually without success).<\/p>\n

4- Consultants<\/h2>\n

When you hire a business, finance, sales, or any other kind of consultant, no matter which area of the company you want them to analyze and improve, you must know exactly who you are hiring. Many companies treat this investment as a cost and chase the cheapest option. In reality it is an investment. I have rescued projects from companies on the edge of collapse because they trusted a cheap consultant who did not know what he was doing and took the work only because he needed money, without the qualifications to handle it. We saved those clients in the end, yet it cost them far more than if they had reached out to us from the start.<\/p>\n

5- The media<\/h2>\n

Media outlets sell clicks (blogs, online magazines and newspapers) and advertising space (radio, TV, and the rest). That means the content they publish is not reliable. They push exaggerated, incorrect, or unchecked information because they need views and page visits to make money. Even knowing that this business model depends on how many people visit the outlet, many entrepreneurs still trust them and make decisions based on what they say. I always recommend subscribing to business and finance newspapers or magazines that charge a fixed monthly fee and carry no advertising. The reporters\u2019 work will be higher quality, and the information you use to steer your business will be more accurate.<\/p>\n
